Neither anthropological nor even documentary, the Totem series is another try at the tree symbolic my work started addressing since the 1995 " Totem de ville " installation (Galerie Entre-cadre, Montréal). The 2004 stay in the Queen Charlotte Islands -the cradle of the North American totem- really enabled me to feel and explore the blurred frontier between Spirit, Nature and the Elements.
The enormous mental weight of this rain forest from the North; my eye -at its turn- being stared at by the totemic figures: in a funny way my imagination was both fulfilled and fooled. While within the forest some fallen trees sported the composure of the totem posted in the villages, at other moments on the road, glancing sideways from the windshield I was mistaking phone poles for them again: those incredible presences pointing at the Sky.
